Government treats North and South equally when it comes to development – PM Mahinda

Colombo, 02 July, (

The Government treats the North and the South of the country equally when it comes to development projects and livelihood improvement projects, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said.

“We do not treat differently the North or the South of the country when carrying out development projects and living standard enhancement projects”, he told a group of Tamil journalists at Temple Trees yesterday.

He also said the Government considers both parts of the country alike in implementing all these programmes for the public of the country.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa met with Tamil journalists at Temple Trees yesterday, welcomed the comments which claim the TNA would support the government after the 2020 General Election.

“Anyone is welcome to support the government and oppose it,” said the Prime Minister.

Prime Minister said the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), while claiming to represent the people of the North, replaced their crucial issues with those that enabled their political benefits.

He recalled how a vast number of development projects became evident in the Northern and Eastern Provinces during the tenure of his government from 2005-2010, since 1977.

Apart from the development projects carried out and implemented during his tenure, the good governance government failed to provide such a service for the people of the North and East, said the Prime Minister.

In addition, the Prime Minister stated the Government of Sri Lanka will prioritize addressing the drinking water issue, which is a major problem faced by the people in the North and East.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa assured investments in Sri Lanka would be protected and investors will be encouraged to invest in the North of the country as well.

“I do not approve the comments made by Karuna Amman,” said the Prime Minister during the meeting.

Prime Minister Rajapaksa pointed out that the former Good Governance Government did no such mega development projects in the North and the East during their tenure. He also said that the Tamil National Alliance who pretended to be the voice of the Tamil people, gained political benefits rather than solving their issues.

The Prime Minister said that one of the main issues of the Tamil People in the North and the East is the water issue for which the Government has already formulated solutions. He also said that it was the responsibility of the media personnel to reveal the genuine issues of the Tamil people in those provinces.

Ministers Douglas Devananda and Dr. Bandula Gunawardena also participated in the meeting.
