President seeks medical experts’ opinion to defeat COVID - 19

A meeting between President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and medical experts representing various fields was held at the Presidential Secretariat on Thursday 9th to get expert medical opinion on how to promptly prevent the COVID - 19 in the country.

During this meeting it was discussed at length of the steps that have been taken by the government, security forces and the officials in the health sector to prevent the spread of COVID 19 as well as the steps to be taken in future.

The medical experts pointed out the importance of conducting investigations on groups that were in close contact with infected persons and who have had contacts in two stages further.

President Rajapaksa instructed the health authorities to take necessary steps to acquire more test kits in order to face any situation, even though sufficient COVID 19 test kits are available.

The group of medical experts commended the President's quarantine program launched with the aim of preventing the spread of the virus. They said that further strengthening of the existing quarantine process is the most effective approach to prevent the spread of the virus. They also stressed the importance of protecting areas where the virus has not already spread into. They were also of the view that the spread of the virus to those areas as a result of people traveling from the affected areas should be stopped.

The doctors stated that the first step is to ensure that everyone stays at home to the highest extent possible following the "Panchayuda" system. This approach includes of the use of face masks when leaving the house, avoid touching the face, maintaining of a distance of one meter at all times, and hand washing.

A number of discoveries regarding COVID 19 has been made by experts, universities, technology institutions, and individual groups. It was also discussed of the necessity of promptly conducting researches into those findings at professional level.

The president also inquired about persons who are more prone to risks of being speedily infected with COVID - 19 and what measures should be taken to protect these vulnerable groups. It was mentioned that people with diabetes, asthma and heart diseases need to be vigilant and that they should take the medication as prescribed by physicians.

The doctors emphasized the importance of abstaining from smoking. The expert team also pointed out the importance of drinking liquids to maintain throat's moisture.

Weerasinghe, Prof. Neelika Malavige, Prasad Katulanda, Prof. Vajira Dissanayake, Prof. Ranjani Gamage, Dr. Kumuduni Ranathunga, Dr. Amitha Fernando, Dr. Indika Lanerolle and Dr. Jude Samantha participated at the meeting.
