While agreeing with EC, do we need an election now?

By S.H.Moulana

We support National Election Commission Chairman, Mahinda Deshapriya’s recent request to all political parties not to seek political gains from COVID-19 relief distribution.

We fully agree with him it is totally unacceptable to seek political mileage out of the current situation when the entire country is fighting to defeat a virus. He expects everyone to do away with political propaganda and only to fight to defeat the COVID-19.

While in agreement with the commissioner’s request we wonder how this is workable when we see the entire cabinet members and their deputies too have submitted their nominations for the forth coming general election, although the date for which is yet to be fixed due to the virus and the emergency situation in the country.

The urgent rescue work carried out by various ministers in connection with the COVID-19 cannot be considered as ‘political propaganda’. Then how can we brand only other political parties if they do decide to partake by giving a helping hand to ease the current situation as seeking ‘political mileage’?

We think we have to give all political parties equal chances and welcome every party’s contribution in this current desperate situation the country is experiencing.

Let us postpone the election to a distant date at least until we have totally conquered our enemy and hoisted our victory flag.

That would help everyone including all political parties to contribute for this battle against our enemy COVID-19.
