Asia lost its only hope of winning the cup

By S.H.Moulana

We enjoyed an exciting finish in the first semi-final match where New Zealand managed to knock out India narrowly.

India was a raging hot favorite to lift the World Cup this time.

Although, the Asian continent was represented by not less than five teams – half of the total number of teams took part- only India reached the semi-final stage by topping the table.

Rest of the Asian teams finished in this order; Pakistan fifth, Sri Lanka sixth, Bangladesh eighth and Afghanistan last.

Out of the teams now left New Zealand and England are yet to win the World Cup.

The teams which were in the fray and have won the cup previously are; Australia, West Indies, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Let’s see who will lift the World Cup this time?

In sport you must be prepared to accept victory or defeat but some fans behave badly when they find it is difficult stomach defeat.

Once captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s Indian team lost to Bangladesh in the World Cup in the year 2007, a fan in his hometown Ranchi died of cardiac arrest.

Scores of angry cricket fans not only burnt Dhoni’s effigy but also tried to damage his under-construction house to protest India’s poor performance.

Also, once when his team lost to Pakistan security had to be deployed to save his property.

Sri Lanka’s World Cup winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga once said that even after a defeat of his team he can freely walk the streets of Colombo undisturbed and he showered his praise on Sri Lankan cricket fans for their ability take defeat as much they celebrate victory.
