“ The president also told me to treat all people alike irrespective of their faiths, party politics, caste or creed and advise me not to dwell on politics while serving the people,” he said, adding that the president advised him to concentrate on developing all sectors in the province.

Stressing the significance of the post of governor, Muzammil recalled that the former President J.R. Jayawardene appointed former Chief Justice S. Sharvananda as the first governor of the western province. “It is such a prestigious, serene and honorable position and I will do my best to justify the confidence reposed in me by President Maithripala Sirisena,” the governor noted.

He pointed out that it was the members of the Muslim community gave the needed information about the perpetrators to the security authorities.

“We are thankful to the timely intervention by the Archbishop Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith which prevented a Black July of 1983,” he stressed. He added that any form of racism should be condemned.

He also pointed out that people are born as human beings but they become members of the various faiths by way of their respective families. Therefore, he said that people must learn to love one another and learn to co-exist with members of the other communities to develop the nation. “ Let us work together as Sri Lankans to forge ahead to develop our country,” the governor concluded.
