No more individuals’ names on school buildings in WP - Governor M. Azath S. Salley

Colombo, 27 March, (Asiantribune.com):

New school buildings built with state funds in the Western Province will not be named after individuals, in his province, Western Province Governor M. Azath S. Salley said in Kalutara district on Monday.

The Governor made this statement when he visited three schools in Kalutara district with Ranjith Somawansa, Provincial Minister of Education; Culture and Arts, Sports; Youth Affairs and Information technology on Monday.

At Eihala Hewessa Junior Vidyalaya and Thawana Primary School, the Governor opened new classrooms, while at Wellipenna Rahmania School, the Governor distributed stationery to students.

Speaking to the press after opening a new building at Thawana Primary School, Salley said that he has instructed his provincial education ministry not to permit any new school buildings to be named after any individual irrespective of their political or social status.

However, the Governor said those new buildings constructed fully funded by philanthropists can be named after them or a name suggested in memory of their loved ones.

The Governor said President Maithripala Sirisena had also instructed the relevant authorities to deploy a systematic program to eliminate various drug smuggling activities targeting school children.

The President had also ordered the officials to take necessary steps to amend the laws to make them more effective, he added.

“We have to extend our fullest support to make this program a great success,” he noted.

Addressing the teachers and parents, the Governor said, “ We will give you best of facilities and services from our side and you have to give us the best results by uplifting the children’s education.”

Based on the results from the public examinations, Salley said that it is sad to note that the standard of education has gone down to the third level, leaving room for two schools to reach higher in the Western Province.

Education will be the top priority in the western province and it is open for constructive suggestions to forge ahead, he concluded.
