Krishna - Colombo Municipal Councilor Shot Dead

Colombo, 10 July, (Asiantribune.com):

Colombo Municipal Councilor Krishna alias Krishnapillai Kirubanandan (40) was shot dead yesterday morning at Sea Street, Colombo by a gunman who had arrived on a motorcycle, Police Media Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

Municipal Councillor Krishna represents an independent group was at a fruit stall owned by him near the Adiwal Street junction at Sea Street in Pettah when the gunman shot him in the head around 9 am.

The killer arrived on a motorcycle and was wearing a white helmet. He was loitering near the shop for sometime and as the councilor came in, the suspect went into the stall and shot him at point blank range, according to witnesses.

There were two employees in the stall but none of them could identify the suspect.

The gunman fled the scene after the shooting.

The Councillor had succumbed to his injuries on admission to the National Hospital, Colombo.

Police suspect that the shooting was the result of a dispute over a ganja business.

Pettah Police are conducting further investigations.

They said the Pettah Police and the Colombo Crimes Division were investigating the incident using CCTV footage in the area.

A Police source said that they suspected that the deceased councillor was shot due to a financial dispute among drug and ganja smugglers.

The councillor was the third victim to be killed in shooting incidents in Colombo in this month.

Two persons, including a woman, were shot dead at Jampettah Street in Colombo on Sunday night (8).
