Arnold Elected Mayor of Jaffna

Jaffna, 26 March, (Asiantribune.com):

Emmanuel Arnold of the Tamil National Alliance has been, short while ago, elected as the Mayor of the Jaffna Municipal Council.

The special meeting of the Jaffna Municipal Council was summoned by Patrick Niranjan, the Assistant Commissioner of Local Government At a special meeting

Voting was held to determine the form of voting for the election of the mayor. Out of the 44 elected members present , 25 voted for secret balloting while 19 for open voting and accordingly the secret balloting was held for the election of the mayor.

There was a three-cornered fight for the election of the Mayor and E.Arnold was the TNA candidate, while on behalf of Tamil National Front led by Gajendrakumar V. Manivannan and Remedius on behalf of EPDP contested.

At the voting Arnold received 18 votes, while Manivannan and Remedius received 13 votes each.

As the second round of voting was abandoned, it has been officially announced, Arnold as the Mayor.

At the last Jaffna Municipality elections Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (TNA) won 16 members, while Tamil National Front received 13 seats, EPDP 10 seats - other parties, UNP 3, SLFP 2 and TULF 1 seat.

It was revealed that Ilankai Thamil Arasu Kadchi made advances with the EPDP led by Douglas Devananda has come to a last minute understanding with Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kadchchi but it was learnt that EPDP was not in favor of such gesture and nominated Remedius as its Mayoral candidate.

After the election of the Mayor, Arnold took up his position presided the Municipal Council meeting and conducted the election for the Deputy Mayor.

Thurairajah Eesan of the TNA was unanimously elected as the Deputy Mayor of the Jaffna Municipality.
