19 injured as passenger bus catches fire

Diyatalawa, 21 February, (Asiantribune.com):

At least 19 people were injured and rushed to hospital after a passenger bus caught fire in Diyatalawa, in the Central Highlands on Wednesday, police said.

Media reports said those injured were mostly air force and army soldiers who had arrived from the northern town of Jaffna to the Diyatalawa military camp.

According to Military spokesman of the injured 7 from Army, 5 from Sri Lanka Air force and 7 civilian .

The bus had been heading to nearby Kahagolla, from the main Diyatalawa town when the bus suddenly caught fire.

Police Media Spokesperson Ruwan Gunasekara said the fire broke out at around 5.30 a.m. today, while the bus was travelling from Bandarawela to Ebarawa.

Among those injured was a woman. The injured had been rushed to the Diyatalawa state hospital.

The cause for the fire has not been ascertained, police said.
