Army Released 29 Acres of Land, at Ottapulam- Vasavilan, located inside Palaly Army Cantonment

Sri Lanka Army, this morning, released the land belong to ‘Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church,’ Ottapulam RCTM School and a complete village land to house 70 families.

The land, to an extent of 29 acres including, the dilapidated buildings belongs to ‘Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church,’ (St. Mary’s Church) and Roman Catholic Tamil Mixed School (RCTMS), which was located inside the Palaly Army Cantonment during the time of conflict and was handed over to the Jaffna District Secretary, Mr. N. Vethanayahan, by Major General Dharshana Hettiarachchi, Commander, Security Forces (Jaffna), today, at a simple ceremony held this morning, at that venue.

More than 100 to 150 local villagers of Ottapulam were present at the ceremony, to witness the handing over done by Jaffna Security Forces Commander,

A 3 kilometers road, from the released land at Vadamoolai, Ottapulam to connect Atchuvely – Vasavilan road, was also declared open for the general public at the event.

It is learnt that the released land would have nearly 70 families and the Jaffna District Secretary, Mr. N. Vethanayahan, said arrangement would be made to call for applications from those people who has titled deeds to claim ownership of lands located within the released extent of 29 acres and once the ownership of the lands determined, Government would make necessary arrangements to build houses for them.

The Sri Lanka Army has released the Land of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church (St. Mary’s Church), and the school - RCTMS, located at Vadamoolai, Ottapulam , Vasavilan only after a lapse of 28 years. Sri Lanka Army took over the this land, with church, the school and the complete village of Vadamoolai, in July 1990.

It is said to be an another initiation taken by Sri Lanka Army to expedite the process of releasing lands in accordance with the policy on Resettlement of IDPs, as a matter of priority towards reconciliation, whilst addressing the issues of civilians in Jaffna.

The ceremony was organized by troops of 515 Brigade. Religious dignitaries, senior military Officers, Government officials, soldiers and civilians were present at the event.
