Sri Lanka Navy arrest 10 Indian fishermen for poaching in Sri Lankan territorial waters

Kankesanthurai, 16 November, (Asiantribune.com):

A Fast Attack Craft attached to the Northern Naval Command, on routine patrol, apprehended 10 Indian fishermen along with a fishing trawler for poaching in the Sri Lankan territorial waters north of Point Pedro Lighthouse last night (15th November).

According to Sri Lanka Navy report, The apprehended fishermen, trawler and fishing gear were brought to the naval base SLNS Uttara in Kankesanthurai and handed over to the Assistant Fisheries Director of Jaffna for onward legal action.

Quoting Tamil Nadu Assistant Director of Fisheries Department, Gangadharan, it was reported in Indian medias that the fishermen from Akkarapettai in Nagaptattinam district were held on charges of poaching fish near Delft Island. They were taken to Kankesanthurai in the island nation along with their trawler, he added.

Earlier on November 7, the Sri Lankan Navy apprehended four fishermen, hailing from Tamil Nadu’s Pudukkottai, with one boat near the island.

The fishermen were taken to the Kankesanthurai Naval camp in Sri Lanka for interrogation.

Also, earlier on October 21, the Sri Lankan Navy apprehended four fishermen and seized one boat belonging to Thangachimadam, a central part of Rameswaram.

The fishermen were apprehended inside Sri Lankan waters.

Earlier in October, eight fishermen were detained by the Sri Lankan Navy, while they were fishing near the Delft Island.

The fishermen were from Tamil Nadu, Rameswaram.
