Who is responsible for the deaths of thousands during the last lap of the war?

By V .Anandasangaree - Secretary General, TULF

A lot of incidents, pointed out and brought to the notice of the public by me, however important they may be failed to reach the media on several occasions. Many matters that the Tamil people may have to face in the future, strike my mind much in advance. Without expecting anything in return, I don’t hesitate to come out with matters that I consider as correct.

The Federal Party (ITAK) was inaugurated by an honest gentleman, named S.J.V.Chelvanayagam Q.C in 1949.
When it was inaugurated there was a need for it. But due to the unsettled situation in the country, Hon. S.J.V. Chelvanayagam Q.C became very ambitious to bring under one umbrella, all Tamils living in Sri Lanka, including the up-country Tamils. What he could achieve immediately was to unite the All Ceylon Tamil Congress and the Federal Party and was dreaming to bring in the up-country Tamils also in course of time, but unfortunately he died before achieving it.

He made the Federal Party, which he founded, defunct and spent all his time in promoting the Tamil United Liberation Front which he founded in 1972. Long before his demise he opted to share the chairmanship of the party with Hon. G.G.Ponnambalam Q.C and Hon. S.Thondaman and brought the party under a triumvirate, with a dual purpose. One was to prevent any split in the party, like what happened to the All Ceylon Tamil Congress in 1949 and the other was, the TULF was left behind by them as their legacy to the Tamil people, to look after all interest, good or bad of the Tamil people.

The Tamil United Liberation Front, so started functioned justly and democratically for more than 32 years till 2004. Unfortunately its democratic principles got completely derailed. The people must identify those who were responsible for the derailment and punish them. Tamil organizations, important personalities, academics, presidents of the University student’s associations of Jaffna and Batticaloa and such others had already decided that the Tamil National Alliance must contest the general election, to be held on 05th April,2004, under one umbrella with a common policy and on a common symbol the ‘Rising Sun’. But due to a plot hatched in Killinochchi, a foolish decision had been taken to contest that election on the symbol of the Federal Party the ‘HOUSE’ merely to satisfy one or two individuals, who were in the forefront.

They should be held fully responsible for the great disasters that followed the Parliamentary Elections of April 2004, one after the other. Starting with the continuation of the war, followed by unfortunate deaths of several thousand LTTE cadre, their combatants, several thousand innocent civilians and many leaders from all groups sacrificed their lives, which brought the war to an end. They should also be held responsible for the thousands of missing persons, who were made missing and the kidnapped ones. Finally the sacrifice of the Heroic leader, with his entire family, brought the Heroic history to a tragic end with the eradication of the LTTE itself. It is very unfortunate that Killinochchi took a different stand very foolishly, even without consulting the LTTE leadership, although the leadership had already decided on a common policy and a common symbol.

If the efforts of those who united worked hard and the dreams of those who fought had been fulfilled we would have achieved the following:-

All Tamil political parties would have come under one umbrella and the candidates would have contested on a common policy and a common symbol the ‘Rising Sun’. All the seats would have been won by the TNA and a Cease-fire would have been declared. Talks would have commenced between the government and the TNA and something positive would have been achieved immediately or soon after. All those who faced death would be living today and also all leaders including Prabhakaran will be alive today. Above all the Tamil people would have regained their lost prestige

I hold two persons fully responsible for all the deaths and destructions that took place in the country during the last lap of the war. Everything was set to contest an election in 2004. With all concerned parties including the LTTE fully agreeing for a common policy, common symbol the ‘Rising Sun’ and all political parties brought under one umbrella were to contest the election. But the mischief caused by the two front liners from Killinochchi upset the whole arrangement. The only reason that could be attributed to these two gentlemen for their behavior, was only greed for power. They still enjoy power that cost the country several thousand lives and total destruction of the economy of the Tamil people. One of these gentlemen from the time of Mr.A.Amirthalingam’s assassination till 2004, got nominated as National list MP of the TULF on two occasions on my initiative. He was also nominated on two occasions as the candidate of the TULF both of which he won. Having enjoyed Parliament membership and other facilities four times from the TULF, what justifiable reason this gentleman can give for fraudulently reviving the Federal Party 28 years after the founder died and 32 years after the founder made it defunct. The irony is while he was going to Vanni and reviving the Federal Party on the orders of Thangan, he was holding a membership in Parliament representing the TULF. If this gentlemen’s activities had been censured at that time, he would have acted with better sense of responsibility on the Northern Provincial Council matter.

Mr.A.Amirthalingam was a founder member and the General Secretary of the Federal Party at the time of his assassination Mrs.Mankayarkarasi Amirthalingam in a statement had condemned the revival of the Federal Party as a ploy to destroy the TULF which was formed by our great leaders. I wind up my statement with an extract of Mrs.Amirthalingam’s statement which says:-

“My husband preserved the registration of the Federal Party for the sole purpose that no undesirable elements could misuse its symbol and the name. He never wanted to revive the Federal Party.

It is a pity that some of those who have been groomed by him have attempted to misuse the name of the Federal Party and are trying to revive it. They have only breached the Trust he had placed on them”.

It is the duty of the people now to find out who should be blamed for the grave crisis the Tamil community is facing today. If he had been censured for the destruction caused by him from 2004 I am sure he would have thought one hundred times before he meddled with the affairs of the Northern Provincial Council. He should know his limits.
