A move to solve SAITM issue
The President of Sri Lanka Maithripala Srisena held a meeting at President's Office to obtain proposals to solve the SAITM problem.
The Minister of Higher Education, and the Deputy Minister, The Chairman of the University Grants Commission, the Deans of all the Medical Colleges, representatives of Medical Faculty Lecturers, the Registrar of the Sri Lanka Medical College, representatives of the Government Medical Officers' Association, representatives of Specialist Doctors' Association and representatives of SAITM participated at this meeting.
At this meeting, the proposals submitted to the President by the GMOA and the Medical Faculty Lecturers and the Deans Society were taken into discussion.
The university lecturers pointed out that this proposal was prepared aiming at solving the entire problem.
It was also pointed out that the following facts were taken into consideration when preparing the above proposal.
1. The risk that could cause the quality of medical education.
2. Medical students in government medical faculties moving away from studies for protest activities.
3. Submission of the grievances of a group of students who had got caught to a deceptive institution.
We observed that Professor Mohan de Silva, the Chairman of the University Grants Commission and Professor Colvin Gooneratne were working in collaboration with SAITM representatives.
As such the Chairman of the GMOA, Dr. Anuruddha Padeniya, had to remind the two professors of their true responsibility.
President Maitripala Sirisena, inquired the opinion of the Sri Lanka Medical Council about the submitted proposal. The SLMC is due to inform their opinion very soon after holding discussions.
However, the GMOA will be conducting their protest campaigns until a firm solution that protects patient’s right to have safe medical care and judicial measures are implemented.
