285 Prisoners Released to Mark President Srisena’s 2nd Anniversary

Colombo, 09 January, (Asiantribune.com):

A total of 285 prisoners, had been released from prisons yesterday in view of the 2nd anniversary of President’s Maithripala Sirisena’s swearing in as President, Prisons Department said.

Inmates jailed for minor offences including those who were jailed for not being able to pay fines had also been released.

According to the Prisons Commissioner Thushara Upuldeniya, those who received the pardon had been in prison as they could not pay the fines for minor offences and there were none who had been charged with rape, robbery, murder, drug related offences or major criminal cases.

The Prison Commissioner also revealed that there were six women among them.

Upuldeniya said that all of them had been granted a presidential pardon in 23 prisons countrywide.
