Ruwan Weerakoon reporting from Colombo

Colombo, 26 December, (Asiantribune.com): In a sea battle that erupted in seas south west of Delft Island, today around 11.30 AM, Sri Lanka Navy destroyed six LTTE attack boats, including two suicide craft during a heavy sea battle. Sources revealed that 24 Sea Tigers were killed in the confrontation, while Sri Lanka Navy lost one Dvora Fast Attack Craft and 12 navy men on board the fast craft missing.

According to Tiger sources, Sri Lanka Navy’s two more Dvora FACs sustained damage and retreated to Kaankeasanthu'rai (KKS) port, one of them damaged beyond repair. The clash that began at noon was still continuing at 2:30 p.m. The Tigers are yet to release details of the clash.

However, according to reports, Sri Lanka naval sea units detected a suspicious boat cluster in seas south west off Delft, today at around 7.30a.m.

Clashes erupted and turned into a fierce sea battle when Naval task units took initiative to cut off the suspicious boat movement, at 11.30a.m, defence sources say.

According to Naval sources, LTTE elements were engaged in a clandestine sea movement smuggling military hardware towards the non-liberated Nachchikudha coast, when detected by the Naval patrol units.

Naval fast attack craft responded effectively towards the LTTE cluster with heavy gunfire and evasive battle maneuvers, forcing terrorist boats to flee further southwards. According to information received, SLAF MI-24 gunship was also engaged in aerial strikes at the fleeing LTTE boats.
