Hearing today in the Habeas Corpus suits against Malaysian Government for the arrest of 5 HINDRAFT leaders

Kula Lumpur, 19 December, (Asiantribune.com): The Habeas Corpus suits filed by the Hindu Rights Action Force Malaysia (HINDRAFT) against the Malaysian Government is coming up for hearing today for the production of the five HINDRAFT leaders, who were arrested under the draconian Internal Security Act, which allows the arrested people to be held in detention without trial for a minimum period of two years.

On last 13th morning HINDRAFT leaders Udayakumar, Kengatharan, Manokaran, Vasantha Kumar and Ganapathy Rao were arrested subsequent to the arrest warrant signed by Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahamed Badawi in his capacity as Minister for Security.

Karpal Singh a leading Human Rights Lawyer and a Member of Parlaiment in Malaysia and A.Sivanesan will be appearing for the five HINDRAFT leaders.

In the meantime, the case of the 31 members of the HINDRAFT who were arrested on 26 November at the premises of the Thandayuthapani Temple at Battu Cove and charged for attempted murder and illegal gathering was taken up on the 17th December for hearing.

Attorney General who appeared on behalf of the Government dropped the charge of attempted murder filed under section 307 of the Criminal Code and their charge sheet was amended to face a reduce charge of illegal gathering.

Under the reduced charges, six of the accused were immediately acquitted as they were students. The balance 25 of them pleaded guilty for the charge of illegal gathering and they were released on bail on the payment of Malaysian Ringgit 500.
