Sir Arthur C Clark felicitation tomorrow

Colombo, 15 December, (Asiantribune.com): The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to host a ceremony to felicitate Sir Arthur C. Clarke on the occasion of his 90th birthday, which falls on tomorrow (16th December). This ceremony will be held at the Central Bank Auditorium on 16th December 2007, under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama will deliver the welcome address.  Dr. Leonov is due to present Sir Arthur a medal from the Federation of Cosmonautics of Russia and deliver an address on “Sir Arthur C Clarke: A personal memoir”. Several distinguished personalities in the fields of Space Exploration and Information Technology from abroad will participate in this ceremony.

The special Guest of Honor of this occasion will be world renowned astronaut Dr. Alexey Leonov of Russia who was the first man to walk in space, when he stepped outside the Voskhod 2 spacecraft for about 12 minutes, on 18th March 1965. He is also a long standing personal friend of Sir Arthur C. Clarke. Dr. Leonov is due to present Sir Arthur a medal from the Federation of Cosmonautics of Russia and deliver an address on “Sir Arthur C Clarke: A personal memoir”.

From the USA, Dr. Michael E. Zolensky, a member of NASA’s Solar System Exploration Sub-Committee of the Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science Division, who will attend this ceremony and speak on “The influence of Sir Arthur C. Clarke's vision on the Future of space exploration”. Also from the USA, Dr. Sarath Gunapala, Sri Lankan born scientist, who is now the Principal Engineer of the Device Research and Applications Section, Jet Propulsion Laboratory (NASA) in Pasadena, California will speak on the “Benefits of Space Science to Developing Countries”

The two apex bodies of space exploration of India and Pakistan will also be represented at this ceremony. Prof. U.A Rao, Chairman, Physical Research Laboratory of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) will speak on “The Information Revolution in Developing Countries and Sir Arthur C. Clarke's contribution”. Dr. Sajid Mirza, Member (Space Technology), Pakistan’s Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) will speak on the “Prospects and Challenges in the Future of Space Research”.

It is expected that members of the Diplomatic Corps in Sri Lanka, political leaders, representatives of Sri Lanka’s scientific community, as well as astronomy and space science enthusiasts including students, will join at this felicitation ceremony, to wish Arthur C Clarke on his 90th Birthday.
