Sri Lanka rushes troops down-south as LTTE launches sudden attack on a jungle army base

The detachment is located 40 km away from the popular pilgrimage city of Kataragama.

Kataragama is situated 228km south of Colombo. Despite being a pilgrimage city, the region is enveloped in jungles.

Initial reports only said that gunfire was heard from the vicinity, without specifying any details.

Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) said, an army point at Thalgasmankada, South of Paanama has come under a terrorist' attack this evening. The sources said that the attack has started around 6 p.m.
