Navy Destroys Two Sea Tiger Boats: Remote Control Air Craft and a Helicopter among the Recovered

Colombo, 11 October, ( Radar operators at the Talaimannar naval base detected two suspected echoes on their Radars about 5 Nautical miles North heading towards Nachchikuda area around 5.30 a.m. today (11) and then directed two Inshore Patrol Craft (IPC) to investigate.

When naval sea units closed up for investigations, the tigers onboard the two Fibre Glass Dinghies started firing at the IPCs. Due to the successful retaliatory fire, one boat was destroyed and the other was rescued by the Navy. The occupants onboard these two boats have jumped overboard amidst fire from the naval units. When searching the rescued boat, the naval personnel have recovered following items including a remote controlled Air Craft and Helicopter (toys):

I-Com Sets -04
GPS -10
Satellite Phones -04
PCBs -Over 100
Communication Antennas -45
Oil -300 Litres

The significance of the recovery lies in the remote controlled air craft (around 5 feet) and the helicopter (around 1 foot). Though they seems to be toys which your and my children would prefer to have, this implies the tigers are getting ready to exploit another terror tactic for the first time in the history of this conflict. During the three decade odd conflict tigers have never utilized toy air craft or for that matter any of the remote controlled air or under water devices.

This recovery surely has averted a major disaster. Tigers can easily modify these two units (who knows how many they have) to deliver explosives at vital targets by saving their few light air craft. It will be very much difficult to detect specially at night due to its ability to fly very low and due to low engine noise. The targets could be either a VIP location, strategic military locations or for that matter naval units out in sea.

How ever it is once again proved that the tigers are looking for all possible options at this juncture and including the Navy the other Services are doing a remarkable duty in order to eradicate tiger terrorism from this country.
