Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle – the indomitable defender of & strongest supporter of President Rajapakse

By Dr.T.C.Rajaratnam

Dr.T.C.RajaratnamDr.T.C.RajaratnamJeyaraj Fernandopulle is a household name in every home where there is respect for human beings, good conscience and rational thinking. A Catholic by birth and respecter of all religions and races and Jeyaraj say religion is love, compassion and forgiveness and to Jeyaraj there is only one race - the human race.

He practices all religious virtues and loves helping people and the nation. Anyone who comes into contact with Jeyaraj will develop an affection and respect for him. Affection and respect for fellow human beings giving them encouragement, courage and support are the tenets of Jeyaraj's virtues. Affection and respect for fellow human beings giving them encouragement, courage and support are the tenets of Jeyaraj's virtues.

His achievements and Public life are illustrated in the website Jeyaraj has been a Teacher and is a Lawyer. In Sri Lanka, He is a Member of Parliament and in the Government he is the Minister of Highways and in Parliament he is the Chief Government Whip of Parliament.

An active voice in Parliament. A man who will stop at nothing for justice, fairness and unity. He is fearless, upright and would voice his opinion according to his conscience.

He is not only respected by the members of his Party but also the opposition parties for his wit, quick response and debating skills coupled with skills of advocacy.

As so often happens with men of such force and talent his quest to serve the people and his desire to fulfill the dreams and aspirations of others he has all the time for others and has little time for himself working long hours, he is never tired inspiring those around him and those who come into contact with him as a remarkable and perfect gentleman that any person would like to know. The quality of Jeyaraj's efforts are not for political gain because my personal acquaintance with him has proved that he helps any one and everyone regardless electoral jurisdictions or political affiliations. Affection and respect for fellow human beings giving them encouragement, courage and support are the tenets of Jeyaraj's virtues.

He is an incalculable source of strength, unselfish and rejoices in giving. He is known as the Silver tongued Orator with a heart of Gold. He is also known as the Julius Caesar of Little Rome.

If Negombo is known as Little Rome, then Jeyaraj is the Julius Caesar of Little Rome- not that he is anything less than Julius Caesar but perhaps greater than Julius Caesar for his courage, finesse and style.

Jeyaraj's talents should be attributed to his parents. His mother died a few days ago having cherished her son’s success. During Jeyaraj's school days, his father was a very strict disciplinarian and a perfectionist, a gentleman to the core. Now he could see his son serving the nation having reached the peak of his political career with the portfolios he holds.

Jeyaraj's deep thoughts and the seriousness with which he takes his duties to humanity are unusual for many who are in power today. He is a very busy and amazing gentleman.

Because of the constant giving of his time and strength, he lives by his conscience. With amazing humility and strong religious convictions and belief in God, he has made tremendous sacrifices.

He has held several Cabinet portfolios in Parliament and is reputed for his spontaneous response and skilled debating. He has been helping the poor, improving the standard and quality of lives in the villages providing education for the underprivileged children.

As Minister of Highways, he has immense responsibilities to develop highways to the global level. Many departments and institutions come under it and Jeyaraj has to monitor all intricate details of all what is happening, taking steps to ensure these are improved and has the rare knowledge of comparative study of similar institutions in other countries.

His office in Parliament is the largest one with the largest staff and the entire responsibility of the Government side is on him. He is most meticulous and demands the best performance from his staff in Parliament.

Nothing that is under his purview is alien to him. This has been evident at meetings and conferences where he has impressed upon those before him.

As the Chief Government Whip of Parliament he has been most efficient in the history of Sri Lanka. He could converse effectively in English, Sinhala and Tamil. The Chief Government Whip acts as a channel of communication between the Government and opposition parties. The Chief Whip has a function in monitoring the progress made by Government departments in preparing legislation.

Jeyaraj is a voracious reader and researcher. He browses through the internet and gathers the intricate details of the subject that interests him from time to time. On his feet, in Parliament he is the best of all.

There is none that can match him in the skills of oratory. He is well prepared for any eventuality, quick on his feet.

Opposition members sometimes wait until he leaves the Chamber for a short time at least to say something detrimental or derogatory about the Government. But within minutes or almost immediately you could see Jeyaraj back on his feet to defend and give his share of the contribution.

During the budget debates and voting he handles the situation well to curtail and prevent turbulence caused by those on the other side and to effectively take all measures to get the budget passed.

If a politician can get his message across in a three minute interview or on an off-the record briefing to the journalist, the arguments that he sets out had been fermenting in his mind bottled up over a period of time and as such the words that flow is like vintage wine.

The crux of his successful oratory is the bond of empathy between him and the audience. The greatest talent a politician can have is the ability to convey sincerity.

He has impressively displayed that left over his fieriest critics unable to cast doubt on the strength of his beliefs, his efficiency, capability and oratorical skills which none can match in the present Parliament.

Great speeches need not be made by great leaders; Jeyaraj's speeches are spontaneous, on the spur of the moment with chosen a thought which flows as words most appropriate for the moment. Every word uttered by him is as powerful in its intellectual and moral force.

Jeyaraj's skills of advocacy is often seen in Parliament when he defends any Government Member. Like any skilled in advocacy he has the ability to make something out of nothing and nothing out of something.

Some believe there is nothing one man or one woman can do against the enormous array of the world's ills. Yet many of the world's great movements of thoughts and action have flowed from the work of a single man.

A young monk began the Protestant reformation, a young general extended an empire from Macedonia to the borders of the earth and a young woman reclaimed the territory of France.

It was a young Italian explorer who discovered the New World and thirty two year old Thomas Jefferson who proclaimed that all men are created equal.

These men moved the world...few have the greatness to bend history itself...It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped.

Each time Jeyaraj stands up for an ideal or acts to improve the lot of others or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.

Few are willing to brave the disapproval of their fellows; the censure of their colleagues...Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence.

Yet it is the one essential vital quality for those who seek to change a world that yields most painfully to change. Jeyaraj has manifested a deep concern for humanity.

His intellectual brilliance coupled with his dynamic linguistic skills has enabled him to become one of the most respected Members of Parliament. It is manifest and evident that the Government is nothing in Parliament without Jeyaraj Fernandopulle- his analytical thinking and skills of oratory leaves even the opposition spellbound.

Each time the Opposition tries to strike, Jeyaraj strikes back using the subject matter so that nothing more could be said. In short the Opposition is crippled by Jeyaraj.

He is the one of the rare politicians who helps anyone or everyone regardless of their political affiliations and electoral jurisdictions. In fact, people from all parts of the Island approach him. He gives them an audience unlike most politicians in power.

Often, the People find it difficult to meet their own representative, but Jeyaraj is available to anyone and everyone. Tall, handsome Jeyaraj likes to look stern but he is as innocent as a child - this silver tongued Gentleman with a heart of Gold!
