Murder of Anna Politkovskaya : time to know the truth, says PACE President

Strasbourg, 07, October, (Asiantribune.com): One year after the murder of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, René van der Linden, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), made the following statement: The murder of Anna Politkovskaya, one of Russia's most courageous journalists, was a direct attack on democracy, and it must not go unpunished. The murder of Anna Politkovskaya, one of Russia's most courageous journalists, was a direct attack on democracy, and it must not go unpunished.

"A year ago, on 7 October 2006, Anna Politkovskaya was shot in Moscow. A year later, light has still to be shed on this murder.

The murder of Anna Politkovskaya, one of Russia's most courageous journalists, was a direct attack on democracy, and it must not go unpunished. I renew my appeal to the Russian authorities to do everything in their power to bring the truth to light, and to the Russian Parliament to follow the investigations closely.

Journalists are the indispensables champions of freedom of expression. On this occasion, I should like to pay them tribute: in their work, they are advancing the cause of democracy and the rule of law ".
