Former president Chandrika congratulates Mangala and Ranil on new alliance

Colombo, 21 July, ( Former Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga sent a congratulatory message yesterday to Mangala Sanmaraweera and UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe on their new political alliance.

While congratulating on the new alliance, she said ""During my presidency, even I dreamed for something like this, but I could not. When we came to power in 1994, we tried to be pluralistic and represent everyone -as possible."

She added "But the JVP and UNP could not join us. Unfortunately, today SLFP is deviating from its original moderate policies. This especially evident on its economic policies and the ethnic conflict. I fear that this trend may not reverse."

UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and SLFP (M) wing convener Mangala Samaraweera signed an MoU for a new political alliance at 11:52 am on July 20. UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said "under the new MoU all ethnic communities will be treated equally. A more efficient government with a reduced cabinet will be brought in."

The new coalition is called the ``National Congress'' and will propose broad political and economic reforms, it was announced. Sacked Minister Sripathy Sooriyarachchi was also present on the occasion.

The MoU also says that the parties want to protect human rights and democracy, fight corruption, strengthen the economy and end the country's more than two-decade-old civil war.
