Coalition spirit not maintained in recent presidential election in Nagaland: Dr Lotha

By Oken Jeet Sandham - Asian Tribune

Kohima, 21 July (NEPS): The just concluded country’s presidential election has not augured well especially in states where the governments run by coalition. There have been visible sign of sharp division within the coalition partners when the members were to cast their votes one for UPA sponsored Pratibha Patil, while the other for NDA backed-Independent candidate Bhairon Singh Shakhawat.

In Nagaland too, the non-Congress DAN coalition government have been sharply divided while choosing to vote for the Presidential candidates. Much against the wishes of the coalition partner, especially the BJP, the major ruling NPF had gone ahead deciding to vote Congress-led UPA sponsored candidate Pratibha Patil on July 6. Such decision has actually brought utter surprise to not only the BJP but also other DAN coalition partners.

Asked about his reaction to the major ruling NPF’s voting for the UPA sponsored candidate instead of voting for the NDA backed-Independent one, Dr TM Lotha who was also BJP’s polling agent for Independent candidate expressed wonder the manner in which the major NFP ruling party had voted for the Congress candidate Pratibha Patil.

“We should have some political principle and at least in a state like ours where the government is run by non-Congress coalition partners backed by the NDA, voting against our own candidate is uncalled for,” fumed Dr Lotha, who is also State Health and Family Welfare Minister. “But we are committed to the pre-poll alliance and would never shy away from our responsibilities.”

The BJP legislature party chief also termed as ridiculous the NPF’s claim at times that they only supported the Congress-led UPA government at the Center on issue based matter, in spite of the fact that this very present DAN government had enjoyed unprecedented economic packages, development packages and more so in getting certain status to the Naga political issue from the previous BJP-led NDA government.

Dr Lotha reminded that he along with some BJP leaders had earlier discussed that consultation among the coalition partners was necessary for the coming presidential election, which the Chief Minister readily agreed to. But such consultation did not take place rather the NPF had unilateral decision to go for conscience vote which was much against the pre-poll understanding. “This is unbecoming and against the spirit of the coalition,” he pointed out.

This was not the first time that the major ruling NPF had betrayed the BJP. In the past by-elections and MP elections too, they had never allowed the BJP to field their own candidates. Even in the last two by-elections, which were necessitated due to the sudden unfortunate demise of their two BJP MLAs, they did not even make room for the BJP to play there. “Yet we still tolerate and continue to maintain the pre-poll coalition spirit,” Dr Lotha said re-assuring that despite of all these un-friendly attitudes of the ruling NFP, they would do their best that the present DAN coalition ministry in Nagaland complete its tenure and never go against the wishes of the coalition spirit.
