Lanka rebel Ministers open new political office, begin talks with opposition camps

Colombo, 28 June , ( Former Lankan rebel Ministers Mangala Samaraweera and Sripathy Sooriyarachchi launched talks with political parties this morning when they met opposition leader, UNP's Ranil Wickremesinghe. Amidst allegations by government that SLFP (M) faction is heading a conspiracy against the government, the convener of SLFP (M) faction Mangala Samaraweera said "Our talks are aimed at forming a broad front against the current government."

The SLFP (M) faction also announced the opening of their political offices at No 175, Castle Street Rajagiriya, on the immediate outskirts of capital Colombo.

Reacting immediately to the Mangala-UNP meeting, the government spokesman Highways Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle said "This is a conspiracy against the government. If Mangala is going along with the UNP then he cannot be an SLFP moderate as he claims to be. In fact, this is a conspiracy by Mangala to join the JVP with the UNP against the government. SLFP will forge ahead. These alliances are no bar against us."

Both rebel Ministers Mangala and Sripathy arrived this morning at UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe for talks with their businessman ally Tiran Alles. "I am ready to bury my past differences with the UNP for the sake our future. Initially we will talk about areas in which we have consensus. We need to change this political culture" said convener of SLFP (M) Mangala speaking to the media before they met the opposition leader.

UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe speaking to the media said "SLFP is now deteriorating. With this new beginning we will be able to fight the government."

After the meeting, Tissa Attanayake Gen secretary of the UNP, who also were in the discussions said "These discussions are aimed at turning the government on its head. The talks were held with the objective of beginning a new political alliance and creation of a new people's movement against the government."

Sripathy Sooriyarachchi said "The SLFP (M) faction agreed with UNP to form a campaign committee that will look in-depth into the proposals. The committee will include UNP members and SLFP (M) members" he said.
