“The 13th Amendment, is that the most expedient resolution or not for the prevalent ethnic crisis in Sri Lanka”

On Friday, 19 July the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute for International Relations and Strategic Studies initiated its inaugural Debate Programme between Sri Lanka Law College Students and University of Colombo Law Faculty Students. “The 13th Amendment, is that the most expedient resolution or not for the prevalent ethnic crisis in Sri Lanka” became the theme for the debate programme.

The debate was moderated by Mr. Ajith Jayawardena, Senior Lecturer of University of Colombo.

Minister Dilan Perera MP, Udith Lokubandara MP, Dr. Prathibha Mahanamahewa and Mr. Nishantha Warnasingha chaired the panel of judges.

The programme was a great success with its massive crowd and the qualitative performance of the debate participants. The winning team University of Colombo Law faculty Students, reached agreement debating that “the 13th Amendment is not the most expedient resolution for the prevalent ethnic crisis in Sri Lanka”. Sri Lanka Law College students who debated that the “13th Amendment is the most expedient resolution for the prevalent ethnic crisis” were the runners up of the day.

The Executive Director of the Kadirgamar Institute Mr. Asanga Abeyagoonasekera stated that lkiirss act gives provision to discuss on subjects of law, national security, environment, post conflict peace and international relations, institute prefers to organize many more such debate programmes in the future and further stated that such discussions would acknowledge the public to engage practically in negotiating the national, political, social, economic and cultural issues of the country.

Furthermore, the Institute will be privileged to facilitate many more discussions and debate series in the future.Executive Director thanked Tharunyayata hetak since debate was a partnership with Tharunyayata Hetak and Namal Rajapaksa participated for the event.

LKIIRSS, Sri Lanka’s national premier think tank is a multi-disciplinary research forum dedicated to analyzing Sri Lanka’s strategic interests in the realm of international relations, within the contemporary domestic and global contexts. The institute regularly host seminars, public lectures, and national conferences on topics that influence and shape policy.

The next event will be the ‘National Conference on the Role of Religion in Reconciliation’ – an installment of widely acclaimed ‘National Conferences on Reconciliation’ series on the 23rd of July at 2pm.
