5910 applications received for registration as voters from IDPS in the North & East

The Elections Department has received a total of 5910 applications by midnight of 2nd July for registration as voters in the North and East from the Internally Displaced Persons, who are so far not registered as voters anywhere in Sri Lanka for the year 2012.

Registration Of Electors (Special Provisions) Act No. 27 of 2013" was passed on 18th of June, at the Sri Lanka Parliament to facilitate Internally Displaced Persons who are not registered as voters anywhere in Sri Lanka for the year 2012 and the Speaker has certified it on 20th June and gazzetted.

Subsequently, Commissioner Elections took measures to call for applications from the internally displaced people to register as voters.

Receiving the application for registration as voters expired by 2nd midnight and Asian Tribune learnt that the reception from the IDPs to register as voters were not that encouraging.

It was reported that more than 125,000 IDPs were living in the Puttalam district alone and nearly 50,000 to 60,000 of them were not registered as voters anywhere in Sri Lanka.

Parliamentarian Hunais Farook from Vanni when contacted told Asian Tribune that his party, All Ceylon Muslim Congress undertook a campaign in the midst of the IDP population in the Puttalam district and urged them to register as voters.

He said that their party members met the IDPs on personal basis and urged those who are not registered as voters to apply for registration.

Parliamentarian Hunais Farook also said that they urged the Divisional Secretaries, Grama Servaka Niladharies to urge the IDPs to register as voters and also the campaign was conducted through mosques in the region.

Asian Tribune further learnt that those IDPs who were unable to apply for registration as voters in time are provided with an opportunity to appeal to the Commissioner of Elections again from 3rd to 9th of this month.
