The Poson celebrations at the Ministry of External Affairs

The Ministry of External Affairs of Sri Lanka held their Annual Buddhist devotional Song festival, Missaka Geethaavalito Commemorate the Poson poya day on 25th of June 2013, amidst a large gathering of Ministry Staff and members of the diplomatic corps.

It was organized by the External Affairs' Seva Vanitha Unit with the gentle but able leadership of Mrs. Savithri Pieris, the Honorary President and Mrs. Krishanthi Perera , the honorary Vice President.

The Welfare Association of the Ministry headed by Mr. Abeyaratne Ratnayaka, Mr. Neranjan Pathiratne, Mr. Nimal Senadheera, Ms. Dilini Abeysekera and Mr. Poshitha Perera et al. offered a much appreciated helping hand. The Protocol Division of the Ministry saw to perfection, all protocol arrangements.

The program consisted of 3 main items, the devotional songs, quotations in English of the Dhammapadaya read by Ms. Thiloma Abhayajeewa and a passage on renunciation from Light of Asia by Sir Edwin Arnold recited by Mr. Evan Perera.

The Choir was selected by open auditions held on two consecutive days by veteran musician, Rohana Siriwardena.

Having undergone two rounds of auditioning, the following officers of the Ministry were chosen for the choir:

Ms. Nuwanthi Jayasundara, Ms. Shashikala Madanayaka, Ms. Dilini Gunasekera, Ms. W.K.D. Damayanthi, Ms. W.H.M.N.N. Wijesinghe, Ms. W.D.C. Jayathunga, Ms. Thilini Kumari, Ms. D. Umani, Mrs. Priyadarshani Calyaneratne - Karunaratne, Ms. W.M. N. Fernando, Ms. Dammika Jayasinghe, Ms. Shanika Ekanayaka, Ms. sudeepthi Liyanage, Ms. L.G.D. Gangadari, Mr. Sunil Hettiarachchi, Mr. G.N.P. Kumara, Mr. Ravindra Senanayake, Mr. G.G. Kudagoda, Mr. Rizvi Shyam, Mr. Dileepa Vithanage, Mr. Lahiru Edirisinghe, Mr. Vishvanath Aponsu, Mr. H. Karunaratne, Mr. Hemantha Jayawardena and Mr. Wasantha Denipitiya.

The Music and the choir was trained under the guidance of veteran musician Mr. Rohana Bogoda and his oriental orchestra. The highlight of the program was that a new song, written by Mr. Hemasiri Gunatunga, set to music by Mr. Rohana Bogoda, sung by the Ministry choir.

Minister of External Affairs, Prof. G. L. Pieris was the Chief Guest and Neomal Perera, Deputy Minister of External Affairs was the Guest of Honour.

Mr. Karunatileka Amunugama, Secretary to the Ministry of External Affairs and Mrs. Dilum Amunugama also graced the occasion.

Cultural diplomacy is a significant part of modern Diplomacy. Minister, Professor Pieris, a very eloquent speaker, spoke about the significance and the tradition of singing Buddhist devotional songs and the significance of the Poson (June) full moon day. He touched upon the Selalihini Sandeshaya, A masterpiece of Sinhala literature, and spoke about the influence of Buddhism in the development of culture and literature of Sri Lanka.
