Major General Daya Ratnayake - 20th Army Commander from 1st of August
Major General Daya Ratnayake, the present Chief pf Staff of the Sri Lanka Army would be the next Army commander effective from 1st of August.
It has been officially announced that he will promoted as the Lt. General effective from 1st of August and on the same day he will assume duty as the Commander of the Sri Lanka Army.
On the very same day, the present Chief of Defense Staff Air Chief Marshal Roshan Goonetileke will relinquish his position and General Jagath Jayasuriya, the present Army Commander will take over that position.
Major General R.M. Daya Rathnayake, more popularly known as 'Daya Rathnayake' is currently the 43rd Chief of Staff in the Sri Lanka Army (since February 2010). He will become the 20th Army Commander of Sri Lanka.
Major Gen. Daya Ratnayake, one of the country’s most decorated Army officers is also to be promoted as Lieutenant General.
Major General Ratnayake, spearheaded the Army’s first major Operation in the Eelam war 4 in the East which was considered the major catalyst in the ensuing Humanitarian Operations ending with annihilation of the LTTE.
During the Humanitarian Operations, Maj. Gen. Ratnayake held all commanding positions leading the forces in key strategic areas including Thoppigala and Vakarai, which ultimately led to the downfall of the LTTE.
Major General Rathnayake as an Infantry officer has followed a number of local and foreign training courses during his illustrious career. Commando Officers Course (India), Infantry Young Officers Course (India), Battalion Special Weapons Course (India), Infantry Staff Officer Course (USA), Junior Commander Course (India), Staff Course (Bangladesh), Senior Commander Course (India), Infantry Course (USA), Management Course (India) and National Defence University Course (China) are among a few of them.
He was previously the Commissioner General, Rehabilitation of former LTTE combatants and Colonel of the Regiment, Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) since 6th August 2009 and 16th August 2009 respectively. He has also served as Military Spokesman from 2004 to 2006.
Rathnayake, a prominent product of Kurunegala Maliyadeva College joined the Army on 6th February 1980 and received his commission as 2nd Lieutenant on 18th July 1981.
