Breaking News: India favors coordinated patrolling with Lanka

New Delhi, May 29 (asiantribune.com): India’s National Security Advisor M K Narayanan Tuesday ruled out joint patrolling with Sri Lanka in the Palk Straits but favored coordinated patrolling between the navies of the two countries to ward off trouble to fishermen from the LTTE.M.K. Narayanan : “Sea Tigers are a threat. Otherwise why should we increase the security?” M.K. Narayanan : “Sea Tigers are a threat. Otherwise why should we increase the security?”

He also said that the opinion of the Lanka was also required to put in place for coordinated patrolling. “I do not think there is any problem from our side”.

Mr. Naryanan met the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi, who is here to attend the National Development Council (NDC) meeting and discussed with him steps to protect fishermen on high seas off the TN coast. These discussions were a follow up to the talks Mr Karunanidhi had with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday. The chief minister is concerned over incidents of kidnapping of and attacks on some fishermen of Kanyakumari area by LTTE.

The NSA assured the Chief Minister that the Delhi would take all necessary steps including enhancing security to protect Tamil Nadu fishermen from attacks on the high seas. He will be visiting Chennai on May 31 for a detailed discussion on the issue.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, Mr Narayanan said that security would be enhanced to protect Tamil fishermen. “We will have to start coordinated patrolling”, he told a questioner but made it clear that there cannot be joint patrolling between the navies of India and Sri Lanka.

Asked whether there was any threat from the 'Sea Tigers' (naval wing of LTTE), Mr Narayanan replied, “Sea Tigers are a threat. Otherwise why should we increase the security?”

Replying to a question about the type of threat from LTTE to the southern coast, the NSA said, “LTTE is a terrorist organisation. We are always concerned over any terrorist organization having sea capability or air capability”.
