Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi pips elder brother Aligiri to the Rajya Sabha

By M Rama Rao - Reporting from Delhi

New Delhi, 27 May ( Ending media speculation, DMK patriarch Muthavel Karunanidhi nominated his poet-daughter Kanimozhi for a berth in the Rajya Sabha. Her election is a formality in the poll slated for June 15 as the DMK and allies are in a strong position to send at least two members from the TN assembly constituency.39-year-old Kanimozhi, a poet and writer like her father, is not a surprise nomination. 39-year-old Kanimozhi, a poet and writer like her father, is not a surprise nomination.

For the past few days, speculation is rife that DMK would send Karunanidhi's elder son Alighieri who 'reins supreme' over southern Tamil Nadu from his base in Madurai. It is also said in both vernacular and national press that he would be the new point's man of the DMK, a job hitherto handled by Dayanidhi Maran, the grand nephew of Mr Karunanidhi in his capacity as Minister for Communications and IT. Maran and his brother Kalandhi over stepped their Lakshman Rekha by appearing to take on Alighieri and thus fell off their long held perch in the DMK camp.

Speculation as to why Alighieri went out of reckoning for the Rajya Sabha is two fold- one he is indispensable in the south, and second, he is preoccupied with cases filed by the earlier Jayalalithaa regime.

39-year-old Kanimozhi, a poet and writer like her father, is not a surprise nomination though. Her name has been doing rounds for a couple of months by now particularly ever since she emerged out of her father and brother's shadows by organising a grand cultural fete Chennai Sangamam.

Karunanidhi himself announced her name on Saturday night as a DMK nominees for the June 15 Rajya Sabha polls from the state. He said the decision was taken at a meeting of top leaders at the party headquarters Anna Arivalayam in Chennai.

Tiruchi N Siva, a former Lok Sabha member from Pudukkottai, will be the second DMK nominee for the Rajya Sabha vacancy from the state, Karunanidhi told reporters. Siva was secretary of DMK's student wing.

From what he said it becomes clear Kanimozhi may not join the Manmohan Singh Government. Already the vacancy in the DMK quota created by the exit of Maran has been filed with the induction of Selvi as Minister of State for Home.

Correspondents asked Karunanidhi whether Kanimozhi would be recommended for inclusion in the Union Cabinet. He replied, "Already, there are 13 members in the Cabinet from Tamil Nadu. I don't think there is space for one more."

What is the reason for his daughter's entry into active politics? He quipped, 'Politics is the reason.'

Kanimozhi worked as a sub-editor in The Hindu for a while some years back.

Her entry into Delhi scene makes the division of political responsibility among Karunanidhi's three children more or less clear – eldest son Alighieri in the south, second son Stalin in Chennai as the crown prince, and daughter in Delhi.

Stalin is seen as the clear successor to Karunanidhi at the helm of DMK. He is presently a minister in the Karunanidhi government. Earlier he was Mayor of Chennai. Stalin cut his teeth in politics by working through the party ladder.
