Veteran Sri Lankan Banker expected to be elected as the International President of Lions

Colombo, 10 May, (Asiantribune.com): First time in the Sri Lankan history, a veteran banker and a social worker Mahendra Amarasuriya is to be unanimously elected as the President for Lions International at an election which is to be held on 6th July 2007 in the city of Chicago, USA.“My main aim is to help least  developed countries to end poverty, improve educational facilities and follow new communication systems to reduce time wastage of the general public,” said  Mahendra Amarasuriya “My main aim is to help least developed countries to end poverty, improve educational facilities and follow new communication systems to reduce time wastage of the general public,” said Mahendra Amarasuriya

Mr.Amarasuriya is the first Sri Lankan who will be elected as the President of the International Lions.

“My main aim is to help least developed countries to end poverty, improve educational facilities and follow new communication systems to reduce time wastage of the general public,” said Mr.Amarasuriya at a press briefing held in Colombo on Tuesday.

Explaining his plans, he said Lions need new young members to launch its voluntary services .At present a number of Lions members are elderly people. This is one of International problem of Lions, he said.

However Sri Lankan Lion Clubs have youth participation and most of Lioness play major role in voluntary works, he said.

At present Sri Lanka has over 400 Lion clubs and serve all parts of the island.

Replying to queries by the media, he said he would assist Sri Lankan Lions Clubs to maintain their social activities, specially expand the ongoing scholarship project for the medical students.

Mr.Amarasuriya hopes to provide vocational training and language training for men and women who wish to obtain overseas appointments.

Without knowledge in an International language, we cannot grab these opportunities, he said.

Mr.Amarasuriya said he has a prime duty to clean Sri Lankan image among the international arena, through his new post.

The Sri Lanka Tourist Board will supply video documentaries to display in International Lions events under the patronage of Mr.Amarasuriya.

If we build our country’s image, we can attract more tourists, investments and peace, he explained.

However he said the Lions never interfere with the politics, but he said that he plans to meet heads of the states of 202 countries to explain Sri Lankan situation.

I will discuss with these heads of states to obtain their support to solve our economic barriers, he said.

Mr.Amarasuriya hails from Galle, from a distinguished family and currently holds the Chairmanship of the Commercial Bank of Sri Lanka. He also held a number of key managerial positions in local companies and non-commercial entities during his period.
