Breaking News: Eight dead and 6400 displaced in Sri Lanka as incessant rains lash Colombo and Kalutara

Colombo, 04 May, (Asiantribune.com): Incessant torrential rains lashing Western and Southern Sri Lanka this morning have killed eight people and displaced more than 6400. At 8:45 am today, a 15 feet diameter block of road on the Colombo-Galle main arterial route suddenly sunk, giving way to a black hole on the highway and creating a traffic block of several kilometers. And City of Colombo this morning alone reported a massive 156 mm of rainfall.

Many roads were inundated, especially in the capital city of Colombo. At the Colombo entry point of Galle - Colombo route, the main artery to the southern Sri Lanka, traffic blocks extending more than several kilometers were seen in the morning hours.

"Suddenly a 15 feet diameter black hole emerged in the middle of the road as the road sunk opposite Roxy Cinema at Colombo 6 (Wellawatte) at 8:45 am. Therefore we closed the road. Traffic to-and-from Colombo-Galle were diverted through the High Level and parallel roads" said traffic police spokesman from Colombo 6, speaking to the media. Colombo, Kalutara and Galle are the main Districts affected by this morning's onslaught.

Reports reaching Colombo said that in the Districts of Kurunegala and Batticaloa scores of irrigation tanks were at near overflow levels this morning. This was confirmed as Meteorological reports said that incessant rains would spread further inland during the coming days including Puttlam and Deep Southern regions.

Railways plying to south too were stopped at Wadduwa trains stop as flood waters deactivated the electronic signaling beyond the stop.
The rains were caused by disturbances in the southern Bay of Bengal said the Met Department adding that it "is investigating the cause for the incessant rains". The Western and Southern areas will face more rains, the meteorological department added.

The government announced that it instituted special measures to help the displaced through District-Government Agents (GAs) and the Village Officers called Grama Sevaka Niladharis. In Kaluthara District, lying south of Colombo Capital, 1000 families were displaced while in Colombo itself 275 families were displaced. Colombo and Galle relief measures are already underway, said a government spokesman.
