Daya Gamage – US Bureau Asian Tribune

Los Angeles, California. 19 April (Asiantribune.com): In early March when Sri Lanka Consul General for U.S. western states Jaliya Wickremasuriya talked to ‘Asian Tribune’, the Online Daily stated, “within two months of assuming duties in Los Angeles, Wickremasuriya had gauged the political, investment and trade scenario in the most populous and important region in the United States to promote the country he represents, Sri Lanka.”Jaliya Wickremasuriya :"Eco friendliness, herbal, meditation is fast catching up in the United States, Sri Lanka should offer a combination of all these to attract Americans to visit Sri Lanka.”Jaliya Wickremasuriya :"Eco friendliness, herbal, meditation is fast catching up in the United States, Sri Lanka should offer a combination of all these to attract Americans to visit Sri Lanka.”

With eleven western states under his wings, the ‘Asian Tribune’ wrote in its March 2 dispatch, that Wickremasuriya had a clear perspective of the needs of the country he represents, and whom to contact and where to turn to promote trade, commerce and investment between the two countries.

Now, the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Los Angeles has scheduled a Focus Sri Lanka 2007 Expo and Cultural Show on May 28-29 at the California Market Center in downtown Los Angeles.

Focus Sri Lanka 2007, as it will be known, has been conceptualized and created by this most innovative Consul General of Sri Lanka Jaliya Wickremasuriya in order to increase trade, investment and commerce between the United States and Sri Lanka.

In preparation for the Focus Sri Lanka 2007, Wickremasuriya, in late February, convened a meeting of prominent Sri Lankan expatriates, members of the diplomatic corps and other experts for a thought provoking discussion that helped him to learn their concerns and interests. His aim was to inaugurate a US-Sri Lanka Economic Development Forum to facilitate the interaction between the two countries.

The Focus Sri Lanka experience includes a “cash and carry” exhibit hall preview on Monday May 28 beginning at noon, followed by a vibrant cultural show in the evening starting at 7:00 pm. The following day, Tuesday May 29, Focus Sri Lanka’s diverse exhibits will be open to trades people and wholesale buyers from 10:00 am through 6:00 pm.

The Los Angeles Sri Lanka Consulate General office announces that registration and information are available online at http://www.focussrilanka.com .

With almost two full days of opportunity to view and explore, Focus Sri Lanka’s exhibits spotlight exotic and marketable Sri Lankan imports which include apparel, ayurvedic or indigenous medicinal spa products, the World’s renowned Ceylon Tea, decorative accessories, gem & jewelry, home wares, natural and organic products, spices, handmade recycle paper, and many more.

Sri Lanka’s rapidly growing tourism industry will also be represented including action/adventure travel, ecotourism, and luxury resorts.

Consul General Jaliya Wickremasuriya told ‘Asian Tribune’ in his early March interview about promoting tourism in Sri Lanka that “if you promote them (tourists) to go to enjoy beaches, Sri Lanka will never get Americans that far to visit because Maldives Island has much more attractive and peaceful beaches. What Sri Lanka can offer to American tourists is adventure tourism, eco-tourism, nature cum history or eco meditation combined. Eco friendliness, herbal, meditation is fast catching up in the United States, Sri Lanka should offer a combination of all these to attract Americans to visit Sri Lanka.”

It is this concept that Consulate General of Sri Lanka envisages to promote at May 28-29 at the Focus Sri Lanka 2007 in Los Angeles.

The event includes many special attractions, designed to demonstrate the often surprising variety Sri Lanka has to offer: A screening of India’s Bollywood smash film “Water”, and a rare chance to meet its young Sri Lankan star, Sarala; appearances by Sri Lankan all-star Cricket players; a ‘Cooking with Tea’ demonstration by celebrity chef Robert Wemischner; a pottery wheel demonstration and a tea queen beauty pageant.

“Focus Sri Lanka will bring together 40 innovative Sri Lankan exporters with serious American buyers in search of extraordinarily unique imports,” says Gamini Pemasiri, the Consul of Commerce of the Sri Lanka Consulate.

The main endeavor of the event is to demonstrate Sri Lanka’s attractive investment opportunities and world-class manufacturing and fulfillment abilities.

Collaborating partners of Focus Sri Lanka include; Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Export Development and International Trade, Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sri Lanka Tea Board, the National Gem and Jewelry Authority, the Sri Lanka Film Corporation and the Sri Lankan Airlines.

Consul General Wickremasuriya’s endeavor in having this Focus Sri Lanka 2007 at the California Market Center in downtown Los Angeles on May 28-29 is to encourage the Sri Lanka product sponsors to benefit by reaching both the general public as well as top-tier American buyers and sourcing agents for the US market’s most influential importing companies.

In recent times, no Sri Lankan efforts have been made to tap top-tier American buyers and especially the most vital sourcing agents for the American market’s most reputed importing companies in this manner.

The success of Focus Sri Lanka 2007 will undoubtedly open a new chapter of trade, investment and commerce between the United States and Sri Lanka.
