Sri Lanka: Roadside explosion killed 7 and injured 26

Colombo, 07 April, (Asiantribune.com): At least seven people were killed and 26 others were seriously wounded by a claymore attack alleged to be by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam to a CTB bus plying from Mannar to Vavuniya this morning at about 7:45am.

Reports revealed that the bus with 50 passengers started its journey from Mannar town as usual to proceed to Vavuniya.

A claymore mine was triggered on Vavuniya - Mannar Road near 28 km post which was located 12km from Parayanakulam to Pompamadu.

Seven passengers including an Army solder were dead in the explosion and twenty-six passengers injured according to Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Defence. The injured - including seven soldiers - were admitted to Vavuniya hospital.

According to the Media Centre for National Security, 5 civilians were killed on the spot. Two civilians who sustained injuries died after being admitted to the VAVUNIYA hospital.

Two of the wounded brought to Vavuniya hospital were local employees of Swiss Demining Federation (FSD), medical sources said.

Media Centre for National Security in it statement said, “The Government believes that the LTTE is deliberately targeting civilians in an attempt to mount pressure on the Government to stop the humanitarian missions launched to free the civilian population from the brutal clutches of the LTTE. The LTTE has always resorted to cowardly terror attacks against civilians in the face of continuous defeats suffered at the hands of the Security Forces.”

The attack came five days after a bomb exploded inside a bus killing 17 people and wounding 25 in eastern Ampara district on Monday 02 April.
