Police Inspector arrested on suspicion of being a spy to the LTTE

Colombo, 17 January, (Asiantribune.com): A high ranking police officer Indika Perera alleged to have ‘worked’ as a spy to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam has been arrested by the police on 15 January in Matara. He was arrested with a suspect allegedly belonging to the LTTE, and also in possession of 4.5 million rupees and garments similar to army uniforms inside a hotel in Matara in the southern province and both has been taken into police custody.

Indika Perera, the arrested police officer, said to have returned after a two-year leave in a foreign country according to sources.

The suspected police officer was earlier attached to the China Bay police station in Trincomalee and was a Chief Inspector of the police. According to police sources, the police officer had just returned after being in abroad.

The Matara police are conducting the investigations and his friends in the China Bay Police station would be also questioned to find out whether there are some other police officers, who helped the LTTE.

Meanwhile, the Tamil national who had close contacts with the police officer, was also arrested in the guest house in Matara as a suspect belonging to the LTTE. He is now being questioned separately.

According to initial inquiry the LTTE suspect is from Chelvanayakapuram, a suburb, about 3 km off north of Trincomalee town, media sources further said.
