New Delhi, 30 April (Asiantribune.com): India will vote Thursday in the third round of balloting in the Parliamentary elections. Over 14.4 crore voters in 107 constituencies spread over nine states and two union territories will be covered in the day long polling that will decide the fortunes of Sonia Gandhi, L K Advani and 1565 others. Sikkim also will elect its new assembly on Thursday.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi is seeking re-election from Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh. BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, Advani is standing from Gandhinagar in Gujarat, which he has been representing since 1991.
Others in the fray are former prime minister H D Deve Gowda from Karnataka and Janata Dal United President Sharad Yadav from Bihar.
In this phase, the BJP has 95 candidates while the Congress has 83 nominees. The break up from other parties is NCP -19; CPM – 15; CPI -9; and RJD -8. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) whose leader Mayawati has prime ministerial ambitions, has put up 102 candidates in this round.
The five-stage election started on April 16. The first two rounds covered 265 of 500 plus seats in the Lower House, Lok Sabha.
Thursday’ polling will see completion of Lok Sabha election in Gujarat for its 26 seats. Madhya Pradesh will however see polling in 16-seats, while in Uttar Pradesh it will be for 15 seats, West Bengal 14 seats, Maharashtra 10 seats and 11 each in Bihar and Karnataka and one each in Jammu, Sikkim and federally administered Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.
Tamilnadu where the war in Wanni has electrified the local electoral scene will elect its national law makers on May 13.
The counting of votes will take place on May 16. The results will be available the same day.
With the end of third phase, polling will be over for a total of 372 Lok Sabha seats
In Chennai, a Sri Lankan Tamil MP Sivajilingam is said to be canvassing votes for a BJP candidate in Chennai. The Congress has filed a complaint with the Election Commission against him.
