UPFA: Change of Equation in Batticaloa

Seyed Ali Zahir Moulana, Chairman of the Eravur Urban Council is to contest in the Eastern Provincial Council election, in the Sri Lanka Freedom Party ticket.

Ali Zahir Moulana is one of the two SLFP chief organizers of the Batticaloa district and he was earlier to contest as one of the three SLMC candidates in the Batticaloa district. Subsequently when the SLMC decided to go alone, Moulana has to come forward to contest in the SLFP ticket.

For 11 councilor seat in the Batticaloa district, it is mandatory to field 14 candidates.

After the withdrawal of the SLMC the UPFA equation has changed.

There will be 6 TMVP candidates led by Sivanesathurai Chanthirakanthan alias Pillaiyan, the former Chief Minister of the Eastern Provincial Council for the Batticaloa district, 3 candidates of Minister Rishad Bathiyutheen’s All Ceylon Muslim Congress and now there will be 4 SLFP candidates.

Amongst the 4 SLFP candidates 2 will be the nominees of the Deputy Minister Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman, 1 candidate is the nominee of Arun Thambimuthu, the other Chief Organizer of the SLFP Batticaloa district and the 4th candidate is Seyed Ali Zahir Moulana.

In the 2008 Provincial Council election from the Batticaloa district 6 councilors were elected in the UPFA ticket and 4 UNP, 1 EPRLF were elected as councilors and also plus 1 councilor goes to UPFA as bonus seat.
