Girl forced to drink urine for bedwetting by hostel warden

From R. Vasudevan—Reporting from New Delhi
New Delhi, 12 July (Asiantribune.com):

In a shocking incident of enforcing discipline, a class 5 student in Visva-Bharati's Patha Bhavan school in West Bengal was made to drink her urine by the hostel warden as a punishment for bedwetting.

The woman warden’s inhuman treatment has shocked India with calls for stiff punishment. The girl’s trauma came into the open when she disclosed she was made to wring the bedsheet and forced to drink her urine.

A four- member fact-finding committee has been constituted to look into a complaint of the student. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has termed the incident "barbaric".

"We have received a complaint that a class 5 residential student of the Patha Bhavan was allegedly made to drink her urine as a punishment. A four member fact finding committee headed by former dean of students welfare, Aruna Mukherjee has been set up to look into the matter and submit its report to the vice chancellor of the University," a university spokesman said.

Amazingly, the parents of the girl who had gone to take away the girl at night storming into the hostel have been charged with trespassing. According to Poonam Mistry, the student’s mother, a warden of the university’s Karabi hostel had forced her daughter to drink her urine as a punishment when she found that the girl had wet her bed on Saturday. Ms. Mistry said her daughter informed her of the incident over telephone after which she rushed to the hostel.

Shockingly, efforts are on to defend the warden’s action. It is claimed drinking one’s urine was a remedy for bed-wetting. Swami Agnivesh too supported the alleged benefits of drinking one’s own urine to cure many ailments. It may be mentioned that former Indian Prime Minister Morarji Desai attributed his fitness and longevity to this form of medication.
