Visit of SAARC Secretary General to Colombo

Colombo, 01 June, (Asiantribune.com):

Mr. Ahmed Saleem, Secretary General of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is on a three day visit to Sri Lanka beginning 27th May 2012.

During his stay in Sri Lanka, the Secretary General paid a courtesy call on President Mahinda Rajapaksa on 28th May 20012 at the Temple Trees. The Secretary General appreciated the role of President Rajapaksa's leadership in SAARC as a past Chairman of the SAARC, praised him for bringing peace to Sri Lanka and also appreciated the successful achievements of Sri Lanka in the post conflict phase under his leadership. The Secretary General further expressed his confidence that Sri Lanka would play a greater role in South Asian Region and in the work of the SAARC.

The President assured Sri Lanka’s continued support to the SAARC and expressed the importance of implementing the decisions adopted by the Heads of States or Heads of Government during the Summits, for the common benefit of the peoples of the South Asian region.

The Secretary General also thanked President Rajapaksa for the continued support extended by the Government of Sri Lanka to the on-going SAARC process by sending high calibre delegations to the related meetings which provides impetus towards achieving common goals and objectives.

The meeting was attended by the Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, senior officers from the Presidential Secretariat and a Director from the SAARC Secretariat.

The Secretary General also paid courtesy calls on Neomal Perera, Deputy Minister of External Affairs and Mr. K. Amunugama Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs.
