Sri Lanka elected as the Vice- Chairperson of the Compliance Committee at the Sixteenth Session of the IOTC

Colombo, 04 May, (Asiantribune.com):

Dr. (Mrs.) Damitha de Zoysa ,Secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development was nominated and elected unanimously as Vice- Chair for the next biennium at the Ninth Session of the Compliance Committee (CoC 09) of the Sixteenth Session of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) held in Freemantle, Australia from 18 -20 th, April , 2012.

The Nomination of Dr. de Zoysa as Vice- Chair of the CoC for the next biennium was proposed by Ms. Ann Willock , representative from Australia and seconded by Mr. Nicolas Gorodestka, Head of Delegation of France.

Sri Lanka became a member state of the IOTC in October 1996. Dr. de Zoysa led the delegation to the Sixteenth Session of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission which was held from April 22 -26, 2012 at the same venue.

Mr. Roberto Cesari of the European Union was nominated and re - elected as Chair for the next biennium of the Compliance Committee (CoC).

All 24 Member States of IOTC including Australia, Belize (absent), China, Comoros, Eritrea (absent), European Union (Member Organization), France, Guinea, India, Indonesia, Iran (Islamic Republic of), Japan, Kenya, Madagascar, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Oman, Pakistan, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Seychelles, Thailand, United Kingdom, Senegal (absent), South Africa (absent) and Vanuatu strongly supported the nomination.
