Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba is arriving Kathmandu Saturday for a one-day visit to the Himalayan nation. Minister Gemba is the first Japanese foreign minister to visit Nepal in 35 years.

Officials at Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) said Minister Gemba is leading a 21-member team. He is arriving in Nepal to express Japan’s solidarity with the recent developments in the peace process and constitution writing and to extend support to Nepal’s economic development.

Japan is the biggest donor country to Nepal. Officials said Nepal will seek Japanese assistance for the construction of some major projects including the 200 MW Upper Seti hydro power project and grant assistance for the expansion of the six-lane Tinkune-Suryabinayak road up to Dhulikhel.

Nepal is also likely to ask Japan to provide preferential entry facility for Nepali goods in Japan. This facility is expected to help Nepal plug growing trade deficit with Japan.

Gemba will leave for India Sunday afternoon.
