Lalin's Coloumn: Shades of a contrived Abu Graib

By Major General (Retired) Lalin Fernando
News Comments

First it was borrowed ‘Killing Fields’ financed by the LTTE/GTF. Now it is the Lalin_Fernando_50.jpgspectre of Abu Graib by the former genocidal cadres of the JVP with anglicized names (Noel) and new initials (FSP) themselves.

This one could be called Babu Graib. The BBC man Haviland (who wants to know) should be told that SL’s disappeared reappear in the West with new names and soiled passports. But just in case some one misses the message read the last line of the old song-they’re no further use Lou…

There was (supposed to be) an abduction of a Gunaratnam and a Ms Attigala in the second week of April. It kept the thrill hungry Colombians in spasms. A foreign country which bashes Indians and Muslims for sport regularly and one that Arjuna Ranatunge described pithily, shared the much needed positive publicity with some former JVP terror activists. One of them, according to a sanitized version of a ‘military journalist’, was a mythical killer of IPKF jawans and known jail breaker during the time the JVP were responsible for the deaths of 60,000 Sinhalese in one year (1988/90). Gunaratnam had come to SL, as ‘Noel ‘ (Mudalige). Over the years he had many names of all communities but none were Muslim. He was not prepared for ‘close quarter inspection’ .

‘Tie me kangaroo down sport ……..Let me aboes go loose Lou…They’re no further use Lou…’ (Favourite Oz song)

Both individuals were announced ‘missing’ by their comrades but interestingly over 12 hours after their so called ‘abductions’. Who and what caused the delay? Were there unofficial diplomatic trade offs (they’re no further use Lou ) being weighed before the announcements were made?

They suddenly surfaced, of all places, at a police precinct. They claimed they had been abducted and not surprisingly blamed the forces.

Noel on being questioned in the presence of the lady Australian High Commissioner claimed he was well treated. He specifically denied he was subject to any force or that he was blind folded or shackled.

Atigala however contrastingly if not amusingly claimed she had been blind folded but knew that her abductors were ‘military’. She knew that because she had heard some being addressed as ‘Sir’ as though the army has a patent on that word. One David who had a short honeymoon with them when ‘Gunaratnam’ was seen as a striped hope, says the noise of their boots gave them away. He may be still dreaming of jack booted Nazi storm troops in SL but SL troops wear rubber soled boots. Atigala also claimed but without corroboration that she was given a single hard slap on her face, (left or right side she did not expand), hand cuffed and put in leg irons.

It appeared that the ‘captors’ were more afraid of her than him escaping even if he was the one who had much blood on his hands and broken jail before. SL has been entertained by JVP fables before .

‘Noel’ was flown to the historic chosen land for ‘deportees’. En route when he landed in Malaysia, the JVP ‘bench’ ( ‘FSP’ ) briefed him thoroughly on the need to corroborate Attigala’s ‘revelations’ in SL. They had arranged a press conference on his arrival in Australia .

With his comrade ‘wife’ who had said when in SL that she knew nothing about ‘Gunaratnam’ since 2006, and children present, he admitted coyly but not convincingly that he had been physically and sexually violated. Australian media was not titillated. ‘Noel’ did not elaborate. There was no proof. It was a typical JVP(FSP) gimmick.

Neither did Attigala corroborate on the sexual torture allegation. She maintained she was blind folded. He says they were questioned separately. She says not .So was she present and did she, like she said she identified ‘soldiers’ while blind folded, see some disgusting details? She however confounded every one by not claiming she too was abused. ‘Noel’ by the way did not accuse her of being a party to the violation. After all she was shackled. Did Noel have dreadful dreams on the long flight?

The Australian High Commission (AHC) had in its possession one of the passports, if not all, of this known former SL terrorist. The SL government had asked 6 months ago if there was any information on the whereabouts of ‘Gunaratnam’ as a national security requirement. AHC maintained a stony silence until this incident took place.

Amazingly, when it was all over a government spokesman went overboard and called this two timing, devious country, ‘friendly’! Maybe that justified SL paying for ‘Noel’s air ticket and fine for breaching visa formalities too.

What this actually means is that SL instead of changing course will continue collaborating supinely to prevent more bogus asylum seekers like ‘Noel’ from making it to ‘Aboesland’, wasting scarce resources and exposing its sailors to great danger.

Surely it is time SL allows any one who wants to go ‘West’ to proceed unhindered. Passports can be couriered in ‘6’ months’ on a reciprocal basis. Let the West spawn anti SL fronts as much as it wants. After all these ‘asylum seekers’ will in time be told ‘they’re of no further use Lou.. let the aboes go.. SL’s lessons learned at great human and material cost are wasted on foreign shores. However SL must be told more about this charade. It must also not forget.
