No tsunami threat to Sri Lanka at present - Warning withdrawn
Sri Lanka Metrological Department has now withdrawn its Tsunami warning. Earlier Metrological Department issued two Tsunami warnings following an earthquake of 8.9 magnitudes in the Richter Scale that has occurred near Sumatra island of Indonesia.
Also the Director of the Geological and Mining Bureau Anil Peiris informed that a slight tremor was felt in many areas of Sri Lanka.
Given below the full text of the withdrawal of the Tsunami warnings by the Sri Lanka Metrological Department:
The tsunami warnings issued at 02.15 PM and 04.30PM on 11.04.2012 is withdrawn. There is no tsunami threat to Sri Lanka at present.
The coastal areas of Sri Lanka are declared safe and those evacuated to safe areas may now return to their usual places of residence.
Public is further informed that this withdrawal is announced in consultation with relevant national and international agencies.
