Mahela is home and dry as an opener
One needn’t be a rocket scientist to find out at what position Mahela Jayawardena should bat. His batting average as an ODI opener stands at a magnificent 61 while in any other position below half that figure.
Once again he proved beyond any doubt, today, playing against Australia with a majestic unbeaten half century in Sydney in front of a large Sri Lankan crowd.
Sri Lankan team did everything in this tour, except a win but it did it in style today by beating Australia by 8 wickets and more than 100 balls to spare. We hope that Mahela will continue to open with Dilshan, another exciting opener. The most admirable improvement we saw in the team is its high class fielding and tight bowling with Maharoof having the outstanding figure of 2/18 in 8 overs.
Getting the Australian side out within 40 over is something unimaginable but to beat them by 8 wickets and still 100 balls remaining is something really brilliant.
The team has found its winning habit again and it should not look back. We congratulate the boys and most importantly the captain for leading them from the front to display this brave and outstanding performance. Jayawewa!
