Nepal and India have agreed to further step up vigilance on the border to help combat terrorist activities, human trafficking and check smuggling of counterfeit Indian currency.
The two countries made this agreement at a two-day long Home Secretary level talks that concluded on Saturday in Kathmandu.
Talking to media persons after the meeting, Home Secretary Dr Gobinda Kusum said they also discussed the security situation in South Asia and ways to check cross border criminal activities
While Indian Home Secretary Gopal K Pillai led the 10-member Indian delegation, Dr Kusum led the Nepali talks team during the meeting. Both sides reiterated their commitment to not allow their territories to be used for activities against the other, according to a press statement issued after the meeting.
Indian side had praised the recent crackdowns by the Nepal government on the fake currency rackets during the meeting.
Officials engaged in the talks said the two sides also agreed to hold meeting of the Joint Working Group of Border Management in the first quarter of next year and step up cooperation to prevent smuggling of fake currency, human trafficking and terrorist activities.
"The talks were very fruitful and both sides agreed to continue cooperation in security matters, border management and maintaining peace and security," Pillai told reporters.
Asked if the Nepal’s Maoists were supplying arms to the Indian Maoist as alleged by Indian leaders, Pillai said though India had no evidenceof Nepali Maoists supplying arms to the Indian Naxalites, it is aware that they have close links with each other. He declined to comment further on the issue.
