As Mumbai terrorist mayhem anniversary nears, India reiterates readiness to thwart any 26/11 type attacks

New Delhi, 03 November (Asiantribune.com):

After the Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram and Defence Minister A. K Antony, it appears is the turn of army chief to warn about the possibility of a repeat of 26/11 that rocked Mumbai in 2008. India has taken all precautions to ward off such strikes, Gen Deepak Kapoor told reporters here on Tuesday morning.

Only on Saturday while speaking in Madurai (Tamil Nadu), Chidambaram had taken a tough stand against Pakistan. ‘If terrorists and militants from Pakistan try to carry out any attack in India, they will not only be defeated but will also be retaliated very strongly’, he declared in Tamil before a cheering crowd.

Chidambaram has been warning Pakistan not to play with India for a while. His line is that Mumbai attacks should be the ‘last game’ of militants from Pakistan.

In his Madurai address, the Home Minister said, ‘We have been gaining strength day by day to counter terrorism from across the border. I have been warning Pakistan not to play games with us. I have said (told Pakistan) the last game should be Mumbai attacks. (Pakistan) Stop it there’.

In his media interaction, which was covered by local TV channels, the army chief said India cannot rule out apprehensions of a 26/11 being repeated and therefore will have to take all steps to prevent any Mumbai-type attacks. He added both Defence Minister A K Antony and Home Minister P Chidambaram had asked us to be cautious against such threats.

On allegations by Pakistan that it had found evidence of Indian involvement in its own terrorist problem and that some Indian-made weapons were seized, Gen Kapoor replied: ‘India has no intention of causing trouble inside Pakistan’.

The Indian Foreign Minister S M Krishna also pooh-poohed the Pak allegation voiced by that country’s interior minister Mallick.
