Iranian Delegation Pledged Assist Sri Lanka’s Development

Iranian_Parliamentary_Delegation.jpgDr. Anoushiravan Mohseni Leader of the visiting Iranian Parliamentarian delegation , pledged continued Iranian assistance on the three major development projects - oil exploration, Uma Oya development and the tourism sector.

The six member Iranian parliamentary delegation is currently on a thre-day visit to Sri Lanka on the invitation extended by W.J.M. Lokubandara, Speaker of Parliament of Sri Lanka.

The Parliamentary delegation called on Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister. Rohitha Bogollagama, on 3rd November, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Iranian parliamentary delegation led by Dr. Anoushiravan Mohseni, MP who is also the head of the Iran – Sri Lanka Parliamentary Friendship Group, congratulated the Government of Sri Lanka on the victory over terrorism and stressed the need to build the country.

Dr. Mosheni said that the Iranian government will fully support in the socio-economic development of Sri Lanka. He also said that there are several ongoing projects as agreed by the two Presidents of both the countries when they made official visits recently to Iran and Sri Lanka respectively.

He also stated that Sri Lanka was an ideal destination for tourists and the Iranians were well aware of the environment and beautiful landscapes of Sri Lanka.

Foreign Minister Bogollagama welcomed the delegation and highlighted the longstanding historic relationship between Sri Lanka and Iran.

He conveyed his congratulations on the re-election of Dr. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, as the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The Foreign Minister recalled the historic exchange of State visits by Mahinda Rajapaksa, President of Sri Lanka to Iran and Dr. Ahmadinejad, President of Iran to Sri Lanka and pointed out it as a milestone in the history of bilateral relationship of both countries.

Minister Bogollagama said that the discussion also raised the need for an active role by the private sector in the development of bilateral relationship between the both countries. He further added that Iranian delegation took a vast interest on Sri Lanka’s tourism sector.

He also thanked Government of Iran for their assistance in the socio-economic development of Sri Lanka in which both Governments are now proceeding with agreed projects. He further expressed his appreciation to the Government of Iran for their support extended during the national campaign against terrorism.

Foreign Minister Bogollagama emphasized the need for an active role by the private sector in the development of bilateral relationship between the both countries.

In response, the Head of Iran delegation Dr. Mohseni, MP Dr. Mohseni, MP stressed the need for closer cooperation between the two countries in the regional and international fora.

Iranian Parliamentary delegation also met Ratnasiri Wickramanayaka, Prime Minister of Sri Lanka and W.J.M. Lokubandara, Speaker of Parliament of Sri Lanka earlier this morning.
