National Film Corporation says it has already discussed with the Secretary of the Cultural Affairs Ministry to amend the Film Corporation Act to facilitate the digital film projection system in local film halls.
Acting General Manager of the Corporation and well-known actress Nadeeka Gunasekara said the Secretary to the Ministry has agreed to provide assistance to introduce the new concept-digital cinema projection system, which would be absorbed to local film halls in Sri Lanka.
Speaking to the media, she said after the amendment of the act, the
Film Corporation would be the monitoring and supervision body on digital film projection .
At present , a local investor has agreed to provide funding to modernize around fifty film halls in Sri Lanka. These film halls will be upgraded to screen digital films .She said the satellite system will not be accepted by the Film Corporation to distribute films or screen films in these halls.
The new system will minimize corruption in film halls and support the producers and the hall owners and protect their daily earnings .
According to the Film Corporation officials , the Ministry of Cultural Affairs would forward its recommendations and amendments to the Legal Draftsman and thereafter to parliament for approval.
The new system will minimize production cost of films and the Corporation hopes to save billions foreign earnings which goes overseas for copying of films .
The National Film Corporation said most of film producers spend millions to produce digital films .However, due to lack of necessary facilities in film halls, viewers cannot view these films and enjoy its quality through the existing film projection systems.
She said the National Film Corporation will monitor the whole system and local film producers could exhibit their films in these halls.
