Youth’s Drowning case, Police Officer Surrendered

Colombo, 31 October, (Asiantribune.com):

A police officer attached to the Bambalapitiya Police station who was wanted in connection with the alleged assault that led to the drowning of a youth in Bambalapitiya on October 29 has surrendered to the police.

The youth, whose body was washed ashore yesterday, was identified by his relatives and was a resident of Ratmalana area.

Initial reports came as the victim was throwing stones at the trains and cars later a group of people chased him down to the beach and attacked him. Police spokesman Senior DIG Nimal Mediwaka said that the suspect is now in police custody and due legal process will be taken against him.

The police officer attached to the Bambalapitiya Police was reportedly among the group of people who attacked the youth. Police spokesman Senior DIG Nimal Mediwaka said that he was not in uniform at that time.

A private TV channel in Sri Lanka had recorded the incident and the video footage of the assault was aired on the TV revealing the world what actually happened.

Colombo Crime Division (CCD) is conducting investigations to apprehend the other culprits on the death of the youth.
