Nagapattinam fishermen allege attack by Lankan navy

From S Murari, Chennai
Chennai, 29 September, (Asiantribune.com):

Fishermen from Nagapattinam have lodged a police complaint on Monday, alleging that six of their colleagues were attacked in the high seas off Kodiakarai near Vedaranyam by the Sri Lankan navy on Sunday night.

Police said the fishermen were fishing in a mechanized boat owned by one Jegannathan, when they were attacked at a point close to Sethusamudram Shipping Channel Project.

The navy personnel surrounded their boats and attacked one of the fishermen with the boat paddle. They also assaulted other fishermen and threw their fish catches into the sea.

Sri Lankan Navy personnel also forced the fishermen to remove their shirts and humiliated them, the fishermen who returned to the shores on Monday morning, said.

The latest incident comes a day after a group of fishermen from Pudukottai was subjected to similar harassment at the hands of the Lankan Navy personnel in the high seas.

Fishermen from Rameswaram had launched an agitation recently condemning the attacks and also urging the Central and the State governments to take steps to put an end to such harassments.

The latest attacks come on the eve of a proposed hunger strike by film star and Desiya Murpokku Dravidar Kazhagam leader Vijayakanth in Janthar Manthar, New Delhi, on Tuesday, to condemn inaction by both the Central and Tamil Nadu governments on the issue.
